  • Jared Kushner: Security clearance restored for Trump's son-in-law

President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner had his White House security clearance restored Wednesday, a person familiar with the matter told CNN.

But the FBI's decision to award him permanent security clearance, first reported by the New York Times, suggests that Kushner may have turned a corner.

Factors including Kushner's involvement in events under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his lack of candor in reporting his foreign contacts on the initial clearance form also reportedly contributed to the removal.

Abbe Lowell, who has represented Kushner in the Russian Federation investigation, told CNN that questions asked of Kushner during the April interview were "the appropriate topics that Bob Mueller and his team were looking at".

The White House has defended the lengthy process of granting Kushner's clearance, saying it is not uncommon for people with complicated business ties and many foreign contacts to have to wait as long as he did.

Yanny or Laurel? Trump says, 'I hear covfefe'
Not so, say White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley and director of strategic communications Mercedes Schlapp. She fires back, "Clearly you're getting your information from CNN because that's fake news". 'All I hear is Yanny'.

US Justice Dept. Opens Probe Into Cambridge Analytica
The American official told the Times investigators have also contacted Facebook as a part of the probe. However, its head said that they lacked the detail they were looking for.

"Since then, he has continued this complete cooperation, providing a large number of documents and sitting for hours of interviews with congressional committees and providing numerous documents and sitting for two interviews with the Office of Special Counsel".

The shake-up was a part of a White House overhaul of security clearance procedures brought on by the controversy over Rob Porter, the former White House staff secretary who was operating on a temporary security clearance despite accusations of domestic violence. That first session was reportedly limited to questions about former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn, who later was charged with lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "On each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did everything he could to expedite the conclusion of all the investigations". Like the president, Kushner was previously a wealthy real estate magnate and headed up his family's company.

The FBI completed its thorough investigation of Kushner's financial activities and foreign contacts, a task taking more than a year and which had to be finalized before the husband of Trump's oldest child Ivanka could re-obtain permission to access the most closely guarded United States secrets, Efe reported. "Having completed all of these processes, he is looking to continue to do the work the President has asked him to do".

Kushner will now have access to "top secret" intelligence, including Trump's daily briefing from the CIA.

Some experts said the evolving disclosures might have been disqualifying for another person, and it could also explain the delay in granting Kushner a clearance.
