  • Kim may see a meeting with Trump as necessary to easing pressure from crushing sanctions and to winning security assurances in a region surrounded by enemies

"I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day", Trump said.

"It looked like the real Kim Jong Un, but later I realised it's not the real one", said Sagar Admuthe who was visiting from Mumbai, India, after several selfies with the doppleganger against a backdrop of the city's bay.

A former Defense Department official under the Obama administration who was critical of how President Trump was handling peace talks with North Korea conceded that his latest move may have brought Kim Jong Un back to the table.

In a letter addressed to Kim, President Trump said due to the "tremendous anger and open hostility" expressed in a recent statement, he believed it would be "inappropriate" to hold the meeting. The White House National Security Council tells NPR's Scott Horsley that the USA delegation in Panmunjom is distinct from the team led by Hagin.

The two sides are also expected to hold separate talks on protocol and security in Singapore on Tuesday, with a White House team leaving for Singapore on Sunday.

The U.S. has made a decision to hold off on implementing major new sanctions on North Korea while attempts to revive the summit are underway, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Details such as when and where Abe and Trump will meet will be worked out, a senior Japanese government official said.

"Our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself", wrote Trump. He has had the summits with Moon and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, as well as two meetings with Pompeo.

Moon could travel to Singapore for a three-way summit with Kim and Trump next month, Yonhap News Agency reported Monday.

"We're doing very well in terms of the summit with North Korea", Mr Trump said at the White House.

Commenting on this outcome, Lord Hague said: "Kim could say he did his best, divide his opponents including the South Koreans, and relieve the pressure on him from sanctions and at the United Nations while keeping all his warheads".

"We're seeing a positive start to the week just because of that North Korea flip", said Nick Twidale, chief operating officer of Rakuten Securities' Australian unit.

The U.S. has called for "complete, verifiable and irreversible" dismantling of the Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed Monday that it is "imperative" to completely dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program, the White House said.

Since then, North Korea has rejected USA demands for it to unilaterally abandon its nuclear weapons program that experts say could threaten the United States.

Moon said on Monday there could be more impromptu talks between the two Koreas in the lead-up to the summit.

The second meeting between Kim and Moon in as many months reflects urgency among both men to maintain momentum for diplomacy.

Criticising the U.S. leader directly, Lord Hague added: "Trump is the one American leader of recent decades who could agree to that".

China, South Korea and the USA all back denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, but differ on how to make that happen. But experts are hardly optimistic about a breakthrough, even if the meeting goes ahead.

Photos released by South Korea's presidential office showed Moon arriving at the North Korean side of the Panmunjom truce village on Saturday and shaking hands with Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, before sitting down with Kim for their summit.

Pence had remarked that North Korea could wind up like Libya - a country mired in chaos since it gave up its nuclear ambitions and saw its longtime dictator killed years later by US -backed rebels. Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi was killed in an uprising several years later.

For Kim "denuclearization can't be a one-sided event that he's giving some stuff up and not getting some comparable USA action", according to Bruce Bennett senior defense analyst at the Rand Corporation research group. According to Mr. Moon, the North Korean leader said he's willing to cooperate to end confrontation and work toward peace for the sake of a successful North Korea-U.S. summit.

"It's really going to be the unveiling of a pre-prepared joint declaration, and I think that's the official launch of this denuclearization mechanism", Park said.
