Superman actress Margot Kidder, dead aged 69

After her success with "Superman" in 1978, Kidder found steady work in television and onstage, but struggled with finances following three marriages and costly medical bills.

An obituary in Franzen Davis said the actress died on Sunday at her home in Livingston, Mont.

Kidder portrayed Lois Lane and McClure played Jimmy Olsen in the film which also starred Christopher Reeve as Superman.

From there, she kicked off a career that included movies such as The Gravy Train, Black Christmas, The Great Waldo Pepper and The Amityville Horror. It doesn't appear that any illnesses were known to the public, since she was still in good enough health to be taking on stage roles, including The Vagina Monologues on Broadway.

In regards to her personal life, Kidder was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and became homeless in 1996. One of the most iconic scenes of the early Superman franchise was in Superman II when Kidder and Reeve are on assignment at Niagara Falls.

She added that attendees will be able to "visit her booth" to honour Margot and celebrate her life.

"Nothing prepares anyone for that sudden thing of being world famous, it was such a shock", she said.

Kidder got her start in Hollywood with the 1968 film The Best Damn Fiddler From Calabogie To Kalada. She was set to appear at Motor City Comic Con in Novi, Michigan, this coming weekend alongside some "Superman" cast mates for a panel discussion about the film's legacy.

Kidder was married and divorced three times. She also had two more roles yet to be released, TMZ reported.

In 2005, Kidder became a naturalized US citizen.

Five months after her manic incident, she opened up to People magazine saying she had "mood swings that could knock over a building".

She was politically active in her later years and was arrested outside the White House in 2011, where she was protesting the Iraq War. Kidder recalled her childhood in northern Canada, saying, "We didn't have movies in this little mining town".

She also dated late Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, directors Steven Spielberg and Tom Mankiewicz, and comedian Richard Pryor.
