Some 15000 Palestinians participate in rallies along Gaza border: Israeli army

  • Israelis may be anxious but Palestinians in Gaza have actually been killed

Thousands of Indonesian Muslims rallied in Jakarta Friday against US President Donald Trump's controversial decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

It said thousands of Jordanians took part in protest marches in support of Jerusalem and the Palestinian people.

Before the protests ended for the day, dozens of demonstrators broke into the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom goods crossing where humanitarian supplies are delivered to Gaza and ignited a pipeline that delivers gas from Israel and torched a goods conveyor belt, causing damage estimated at more than $9 million, Israeli officials said.

The Gaza Strip, home to 2 million people, is run by the Islamist group Hamas which has fought three wars against Israel in the past decade.

Hundreds of guests will attend the opening event, including the U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman; the daughter and son-in-law of the president, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner; Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin; and Jason Greenblatt, the United States special representative for worldwide negotiations.

Israeli troops killed a Palestinian and hundreds of others were hurt on Friday, Palestinian medical workers said, bringing to 44 the number killed during a six-week protest at the Gaza-Israel border. The crowd on Monday will be unarmed and peaceful, but like a "starving tiger" in pent-up anger and unpredictability, Yehiyeh Sinwar told foreign reporters Thursday. There were protests across Jerusalem and in the West Bank, which is occupied by Israel, in December over the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Israeli occupation forces have turned Jerusalem into a military barracks ahead of Monday's relocation of the U.S. embassy in Israel to the city. The Israeli military estimates some 15,000 protesters showed up Friday, and according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least one Palestinian was killed.

The statement also follows a policy reversal in the State Department's country report on Israel and the Palestinian Territories, in which it dropped the qualifier "occupied" when referring to the West Bank and Gaza.

The protests are scheduled to peak on May 15, the day the Palestinians call as the Nakba Day. More than two-thirds of Gaza residents are descendants of refugees. From there, smaller groups moved closer to the border fence.

The Israeli military has faced global and domestic criticism over its use of live fire, with the United Nations and European Union calling for an independent investigation rejected by Israel.

The US decision to abandon the nuclear accord and recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital has made a combustible region - one with four ongoing conflicts - potentially all the more explosive, some analysts said. Troops were searching for the driver who fled the scene, suspecting it was possibly a Palestinian, as they have used cars as weapons in recent years.
