  • School budget votes and school board elections will be held Tuesday. Here residents of the Fayetteville Manlius school district vote in 2012

Monroe County's largest suburban school district is Greece; it has a proposed budget of $231 million.

In the Troy City School District, voters will decide upon a $111,893,389 budget, with a tax levy of $36, 832,473. This is because the tax increases school officials are proposing are higher than the tax cap.

The polls are open until 9 p.m.in most communities.

There will be contested Board of Education races in six other school districts across the neighboring towns.

WESTMORELAND - Westmoreland Central School Board of Education will present a proposed $22.1 million 2018-19 budget calling for a 2.54 percent increase in spending and less than a 1 percent increase in the amount to be raised by taxes.

Strauch-Nelson said the district "values the importance of being open and transparent with board members as well as the general public and takes seriously its responsibility under open meetings and open records laws, and again, the board can certainly clarify this language". Three of the seats are for three-year terms. At the same time, voters will be asked to approve the district's proposed $19.8 million budget.

It passed by a 7-2 vote Monday, with a final vote expected next month. According to the district's website, if approved, this budget would see the annual school tax bill for the average homeowner rise by $33.

A full 100 percent of districts' spending plans in Nassau and Suffolk counties - 124 budgets in all - passed in the initial round of balloting at this time past year, meaning that no revotes were needed in June.

There are also five candidates vying for three vacant seats on the Board of Education.

The board plans to reject all bids for fix of storm piping and inlets, concrete stairs and the segmental retaining wall as this work was found to be unnecessary, saving the district about $200,000, Superintendent Pat Gavin said. The proposed overall budget is $12,232,212. Any increase to the tax rate will be offset significantly by lowered maintenance costs, the district said in its budget newsletter.

Current school board members, John Dunn, Jennifer Massey, Michele Skumurski and JoAnn Taylor are all seeking re-election to the board as well.

Voting will be held in East Quogue Elementary.
