Alfie suffered from a neurodegenerative disease that ravaged his brain and left him hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit in Liverpool since December 2016.
Despite a series of legal tussles including the Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights, successive judges agreed Alfie had been given "world-class" healthcare but his brain was so damaged that further treatment was "futile" and it was in his best interests to withdraw life support, against his parents' wishes.
Alfie stayed alive for almost a week, breathing on his own until the early hours of Saturday morning. Thomas wrote, "My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30". "We are heartbroken. Thank you everyone for all your support", the mother, Kate James, wrote on Facebook.
The killing of Alfie Evans resulted from the court and medical field rejecting the God-given rights of Alfie's parents to seek alternative medical care for their son.
Evans and Alfie's mother, Kate Jones, lost appeal after appeal in court for the right to take their 23-month-old son to a hospital that would continue his treatment for a degenerative neurological condition.
Alfie was taken off life support on 23 April and survived for a further four days.
