Organizer of protests in Armenia, the head of fraction "EFC" Nikol Pashinian officially approved as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister. "Armenia, Russia is always there for you", the diplomat said. Rallies continued as the opposition demands an interim prime minister, who will not be from the ruling party.

On Saturday, after days of frantic negotiations, two major parties including the Prosperous Armenia - which has 31 seats in parliament - said they would back Pashinyan. A candidate needs 53 votes to get elected.

Observers said Sarkisian's resignation sounded the death knell for the seemingly unshakable rule of the Republican Party which dominated the ex-Soviet republic's politics for over a decade, unchallenged by weak and divided opposition forces.
