Long weekend sleep may compensate for short weekday sleep

  • Sleeping in saves lives

Of the subjects, it was found that people who slept for less than eight hours during the week and weekend had a higher mortality rate.

The authors from Stockholm's Karolinska Institute tracked the sleep of more than 43,000 people for 13 years from 1997.

Swedish and USA researchers claim that sleeping in on weekends might not be such a bad thing, adding a couple of could of years to our lifespans especially if you don't get enough rest during the other days of the week.

The new study, published this week in the Journal of Sleep Research, focused on the impact of weekend sleep versus weekday sleep.

Previous sleep studies asked people to count their hours of sleep for an average night, without distinguishing between workdays and days off. Weekend snoozers, the data showed, live just as long as those who slept enough during the week. Among individuals 65 years old, short sleep (≤5 hr) during weekends at baseline was associated with a 52% higher mortality rate (hazard ratios 1.52; 95% confidence intervals 1.15-2.02) compared with the reference group (7 hr), while no association was observed for long (≥9 hr) weekend sleep.

North Korea summit could still happen on 12 June
Typically, these talks end with North Korea walking away or taking provocative actions that force the USA to walk away. The 12 June summit in Singapore would have been the first time a sitting USA president had met a North Korean leader.

"It fits with what we do know about sleep - that sleep is regulated by the body clock but also regulated by what is called a homeostatic process, which means the longer you are awake the more you need to sleep".

Not in the new study. They are the ones who can compensate with longer rest on the weekends, because there is not as much of a deficit.

So when Saturday morning rolls around, go ahead and turn off your alarm clock - it's for your own good.

After a week of early starts, most people look forward to having a long lie-in on the weekend and it turns out that by doing so we're actually prolonging our life. Probably. But do I feel somewhat like human being again after two days of sleeping late?
