The incident occurred in Solai near the city of Nakuru, 193 km northwest of the capital Nairobi.

Police spokesman Joseph Kioko said water burst through the banks of the Patel Dam, causing mass damage and sweeping away hundreds of buildings. "The extent of the damage has yet to be ascertained", Lee Kinyajui, the governor of Nakuru, said on Wednesday.

The Kenya Red Cross (KRC) and the government have mounted a joint rescue operation in the area amid fears that that many may be trapped in the mud, including children.

More than 130 people have died in the last two months and more than 220,000 displaced as raging floods wreak havoc across the country. At least 38 people were killed, though the death toll could rise as search-and-rescue operations continue.

The 9pm horror rendered over 300 families homeless and about 2,500 residents were affected.
