  • People shelter from the rain as groundsmen work on the wet pitch at Malahide cricket club in Dublin as the start of play is delayed on the first day of the Test match between Ireland and Pakistan

The opening day's play was rained off meaning that the clash between Ireland and Pakistan at Malahide Castle was delayed until Saturday, which cost Cricket Ireland a pricey £66,000. Traditionally, Pakistan has been donning sweaters in Tests with the green stripe, especially when they play the longest format of the game during in the United Kingdom. Shadab (52) and Faheem (61) helped the sinking ship with their unbeaten 109-run partnership.

After day one was washed out, Ireland won the toss and opted to bowl on day two against Pakistan and they started brightly.

The International Cricket Council awarded Ireland Test status in June previous year, while Pakistan were then named as their first opponents in cricket's longest format.

And what drama followed as a hurried single saw Imam-ul-Haq collide with Tyrone Kane, both players hitting the deck.

The coin fell in favour of Ireland captain William Porterfield and he elected to field in this one-off match, with the teams lining up for national anthems before play started at 11:00am local time (1000 GMT).

But earlier in the day Ireland had rattled Pakistan's top order with nagging lines and lengths from Tim Murtagh, Boyd Rankin and Stuart Thompson. The hosts got off to a bright start as they reduced Pakistan to 13 for 2 after 8.1 overs.

Rankin, who had taken one wicket in his lone Test appearance for England against Australia at Sydney in 2014 before switching allegiance, had the honor of claiming Ireland's maiden scalp at this level when an uncertain Azhar (four) edged to Porterfield at second slip.

Pakistan rebuilt and managed to not lose a wicket before the lunch break.

Shafiq is the class act of this Pakistan batting line-up and he moved past his half-century and had moved on to 62 before he played a poor pull shot to a short ball from Rankin, with Andrew Balbirnie taking the catch at square leg to leave Pakistan on 153 for five.

Babar Azam (14), pushing hard at a Murtagh delivery that left him off the pitch, was well-held by Paul Stirling at second slip.

After a few near run-outs, Pakistan's third-wicket duo settled in.
