"I've done my work", he said. "I know that sickening feeling when you bury a colleague".

Babchenko apologized to his wife "for the hell she had to go through in the past two days".

He fled Russia after he received threats for saying he did not mourn the victims of a Russian defence ministry plane crash in a 2016 Facebook post.

"I apologize to my wife".

Yulia Volodymyrivna, Babchenko's downstairs neighbor, said she was terrified by reports that a gunman had been in the building.

"This is the height of cynicism against the backdrop of such a brutal murder, it is anti-Russian bluster instead of talking about the need to conduct a thorough, objective investigation", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Mr Babchenko has also been a contributor for Russia's top opposition paper the Novaya Gazeta.

He said: "Four years ago General Kulchitsky wouldn't take me on his helicopter because there wasn't the space".

To the amazement and applause of the assembled journalists at the headquarters of the State Security Service, or SBU, Ukrainian authorities said they had staged his murder.

"Also, I would like to express big thanks to the Security Service of Ukraine for saving my life".

The movie-like twist came as Gritsak convened the news conference to announce the security agency and the police had solved Babchenko's reported slaying.

"Law enforcers could not fail to understand that the news of the murder of Arkady Babchenko would be a pain in thousands of hearts around the world".

The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement it was happy Babchenko was alive and that the staged murder had a "propagandistic effect", according to Russia's Interfax news agency.

Outside the apartment where Arkady Babchenko wasn't killed, people wept as though he was.

Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko may have been the last person reporters expected to see at a news conference in Ukraine's capital about his shooting death.

"We think this should attract very tough global reaction which will move the Ukrainian authorities towards active measures to resolve the situation", said Mr Peskov.

"We state that the problem of life and death in Ukraine and the trust that the worldwide community vests in its policy are little more than small change for the Kiev regime, which is fanning the anti-Russian hysteria", the statement said.

Arkady Babchenko had reportedly been shot dead on Tuesday at his home in Kiev, but it turns out the Russian journalist and Kremlin critic is very much alive.

It was reported earlier this week that the 41-year-old Russian war correspondent was shot three times in the back when he left his apartment to buy bread. "Olechka, forgive me, but there was no other choice", he said.

He first moved to Prague, then in the fall moved to Kiev, where he worked as a host for the Crimean Tatar TV station, ATR.

The astonishing turn of events brought harsh criticism from Russian Federation and the worldwide media advocacy group Reporters Without Borders.
