  • Coaches of rival teams say transgender lifter Laurel Hubbard's male past gives her an unfair advantage in the women's event

Hubbard won gold and became the first transgender woman to win an global weightlifting title for New Zealand.

The Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive, David Grevemberg, has said that Hubbard had passed requirements.

During the snatch part, Hubbard was set to win with her first 120 kg lift, but tried to break the Commonwealth Games record with a second lift of 132 kg.

"At this stage we don't know the exact details of the injury".

"A man is a person and a girl is actually a lady and I understand a lot of modifications have gone in the past Laurel Hubbard used to be male champion weightlifter", he said.

"The nature of sport is that things don't always go as they should", she added.

She's told media, that could be it.

"Look, it would be untrue to say that the thought never crossed my mind", she said when asked if she was anxious about the crowds not applauding for her because she's trans.

Then, as I put on my hard-bitten sports reporter's trilby, I had to question what seemed like a disgusting tactical move that may have played a part in her Games downfall.

"The strength is still there also and I believe it's very unjust, and for all women it's unjust".

Zinedine Zidane's side had the better of the game and deservedly went ahead after Ronaldo volleyed home Gareth Bale's cross. What we have done in this decade is tremendous, Atletico fans should be proud of how their team is competing.

Hubbard couldn't hold the weight at the top and suffered what she suspects may be a ruptured ligament in her left elbow as the bar dropped from her grasp behind her.

Hubbard claimed that her silver medal at the World Championships a year ago proves she does not have an unfair advantage.

Hubbard's presence had been criticised by some officials from rival countries, but she received a huge roar of support when she was introduced to the crowd.

"I love the way she just wanted to come and not just to turn up, but actually test herself".

Hubbard afterward failed to raise 127kg on her next try. "But there's no indication at all that they were anything other than absolutely fantastic".

Formerly known as Gavin, Hubbard set national records as a male weightlifter in 1998 before subsequently transitioning, reportedly aged 35.

She was proud to have made history.

Hubbard's withdrawal paved the way for Stowers to claim the gold with a combined total of 253kg, ahead of Nauruan lifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant (243) and England's Emily Campbell (242).

Grevemberg said what the International Olympic Committee was doing in regard to transgender athletes was still evolving but stressed Hubbard had met the qualification criteria.

"I think you have to be true to yourself and I hope in this case, that's what I have done".
