On Friday evening, President Trump announced that he has ordered the United States military to attack Syria's government.

President Donald Trump had said earlier that the campaign against the regime of Bashar Assad could be "sustained".

Asked about the risks of USA military retaliation, Mattis cited two concerns, starting with avoiding civilian casualties.

President Donald Trump says he is "prepared to sustain" strikes against Syria until the use of chemical agents stops. The first target was a scientific research center located in the greater Damascus area. One of those targets was a chemical weapons storage facility, which the Pentagon assessed as the primary location of Syrian sarin and precursor production storage.

The third target, which was also near Homs, contained both a chemical weapons equipment storage facility and a command post.

The US and Russian Federation maintain a "deconfliction line" between the US al-Udeid air base in Qatar and Russia's Hmeymim military base in Syria to prevent conflicts.

Russian Federation on Thursday warned the U.S.to avoid any steps that could destabilize the situation there.

Mattis said military planners made efforts to avoid civilian casualties.

"We specifically identified these targets to mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved", Dunford told reporters, adding the USA military advised Russia of airspace that would be used in the strike but did not "pre-notify them".

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Sanders indicated the USA has "very high confidence that Syria was responsible and Russian Federation also". Those were active this week to work through the air space issues and so forth.

US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis (L) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford appear on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

The allies reportedly had conclusive evidence that Syria used chemical weapons on its own people.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said Friday afternoon that Trump "is going to hold the Syrian government accountable".

Biological samples from the area of the alleged chemical attack have tested positive for chlorine and a sarin-like nerve agent, according to a USA official familiar with the U.S. analysis of the test results.

He said under Article 2 of the US constitution, the US President has all the powers and rights to protect US interests and nation security. Just weeks ago, Trump said he wanted to end US involvement in Syria and bring American troops home to focus on the homeland.

"Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

The President also insisted that the USA would not remain engaged in Syria forever under any circumstances. But an accidental U.S. strike on Russian or Iranian positions could dramatically escalate tensions in the region. We were not out to expand this, we were very precise and proportionate. "At the same time, we keep our foot on the neck of ISIS until we suffocate it", he said referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.

"Important infrastructure was destroyed which will result in a setback for the Syrian regime", Mattis said.

Last week, Trump said he wanted to pull out of the war-torn nation, but this week he has taunted Assad ally Russian Federation with boasts of an impending missile strike.
