  • UPDATE The Mace of the Senate Hijacked at the National Assembly

The Senate described the theft in the capital Abuja as an "act of treason" and gave police 24 hours to retrieve the mace.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that suspended senator, Ovie Omo- Agege was arrested by Abuja police at the Senate premises after he led a team of thugs to invade the Nigerian Senate.

According to reports, the thugs are supporters of Senator Omo-Agege, lawmaker representing Delta central senatorial district. Security at the parliament has been beefed up as a effect.

Ekweremadu, in the speech titled: "The Affront on Our Laws Court stops police, SSS from arresting Omo-Agege and Institutions Must Not Go Unpunished", said: "Yesterday, this legislative chamber, the nation, and the worldwide community were treated to the theatre of the absurd, when armed men invaded the chamber to assault our staff and cart away the mace, the symbol of authority of the Senate".

He also replied a text message on the arrest of the suspects from Daily Trust as simply: "No update yet please".

He later apologised to his colleagues after the senate had directed its Ethics and Privileges Committee to investigate the matter.

Trump Appears to Have Changed His Mind About TPP-Again
An Associated Press report says Japanese officials welcome the move if it means Trump is recognizing the importance of the agreement.

"And he has sympathized with us over what happened and he is going to join forces with us to ensure that we get to the root of the matter and make sure this does not happen again", he said.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the leadership of the Senate yesterday reviewed the incident and has identified some of the lawmakers behind the plot to disrupt the activities of the chamber.

In 2000, then-Senate speaker Cuba Okadigbo allegedly removed the mace from the chamber and took it to his hometown in a dispute with his deputy over when to resume parliament after recess.

The police spokesman said that investigation into the incident was still on to bring the perpetrators to book. "I know they are still meeting and they will not give up as long as they see Saraki and Ekweremadu as enemies of President Muhammadu Buhari".

The Senate has confirmed receipt of the snatched mace, which was recovered and returned by the Police.
