  • As Prince's health waned his inner circle had grown increasingly alarmed

The end of a two-year investigation into Prince's 2016 drug overdose death was the trigger to release materials compiled by sheriff's detectives, ranging from hundreds of pages of interviews, search warrants and reports to more than 1,000 photos and videos.

"The bottom line is we simply do not have sufficient evidence to charge anyone with a crime in relation to Prince's death", Metz said, per the New York Times.

Surveillance footage showed the bodyguard Johnson at a Walgreens, picking up a prescription hours before Prince's death.

Police said they found pills scattered all over his home, some in blankets and others mixed together in the same bottle.

Metz says nothing in the evidence suggests Prince knowingly took it or that there was a "sinister motive".

Metz adding during the press conference that Prince was likely unaware that the counterfeit pill had been laced with fentanyl, "In all likelihood, Prince had no idea he was taking a counterfeit pill that could kill him". "The counterfeit pills contain the potentially deadly opioid, fentanyl".

Prince's doctor, Michael T. Schulenberg, will be paying $30,000 due to civil charges stemming from being accused of writing an illegal prescription to Prince in someone else's name.

The settlement "is neither an admission of facts nor liability by Dr. Schulenberg", court records said.

The "Purple Rain" hitmaker tragically passed away in 2016 from an accidental fentanyl overdose at the age of 57, leaving behind a vast collection of unreleased music which was known only as "the vault".
