  • What a Warriors' win or loss in Utah means for the No. 7 seed

The Finals MVP did it to help Golden State.

However, as reported by ESPN, the decision to become an unrestricted free agent does not mean Durant will leave Golden State, as the 29-year-old will instead restructure his deal with the reigning National Basketball Association champions. He plans on re-signing with the Warriors in a deal that will undoubtedly make up for the pay cut he took this past summer.

This contract would see Durant earn around $30 million for the first year and $31.5 million for the option year and would also give him the chance of opting out again at the end of next season to sign a five-year max contract.

By making less money than a player of his level, Durant enabled the Warriors to keep players like Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston on their roster.

Durant told The Athletic last month that, "it made sense to do the one-year deal". "It has yet to be decided what contractual route Durant will take, sources say, but there are no real incentives - for himself or for the team - to take such a drastic reduction in pay this time around".

A three-year deal with guarantees of $35.3 million for 2018-19, $38.2 million for 2019-20, then a player option worth $41 million for 2020-21.

However, he will refuse his $26.2 million option so he can restructure a new contract with Golden State. Or perhaps he'll opt for something in between - a longer deal with player options earlier in the contract.

Durant, 29, finished the regular season with 26.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists per night as the Warriors ended the season as the second seed in the Western Conference. He has morphed into Golden State's best rim protector and is adding 1.8 blocks per game. The financial terms of the deal raised eyebrows as a player of Durant's caliber could have commanded around $10 million more on a max salary. The Warriors' opponent has not yet been determined.
