Israeli troops shot dead three protesters along the Gaza border yesterday, Gaza medics said, hours after the United Nations human rights chief criticised Israel for using "excessive force" against demonstrators.

The recent deadly attack on Palestinian protesters came just hours after the United Nations human rights chief criticized Tel Aviv for using "excessive force" against demonstrators.

Israel is required to withdraw from all the territories seized in the war under UN Security Council Resolution 242, adopted months after the Six-Day War, in November 1967, but the Tel Aviv regime remains defiant.

Earlier on Thursday in Gaza, hundreds of Palestinians took part in the funeral of a Gaza journalist who died after being shot by Israeli troops while covering a protest on April 13.

Paramedics in Gaza have also told Amnesty staff of difficulties evacuating injured protesters due to the Israeli army firing tear gas canisters at them.

"These trends call into question to what extent the ISF's rules of engagement, which are not public, are in line with worldwide law, or at least to what degree the ISF abides by its own rules", said Zeid.

Many were transferred to hospital for medical treatment due to the severity of their condition.

Protesters hurled stones and rolled burning tyres toward the fence, and some attached cans of burning petrol to kites and flew them into Israeli territory.

B'Tselem's El-Ad stressed that "extensive past experience clearly demonstrates that the recently announced Israeli "investigation" of some of these fatalities is nothing more than a whitewash mechanism", and "part of a façade created to give the impression that Israel is abiding by its legal obligation to investigate".

At least four people were wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Hamas outpost at a port in Gaza on Friday evening, Palestinian media reported. In other scenes, a small group lobs stones at an Israeli military vehicle on the other side of the fence.

Israel's response to the demonstrators has come under fierce criticism from the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, who called for into question the Israeli army's use of "excessive force", adding that Israel should be held to account.

The protest movement is officially independent but has the backing of Hamas, which has fought three wars with Israel since 2008.

After dark, Hamas said an Israeli drone fired missiles at two boats moored off the Gaza shore and caused damage.

The killed included a 15 year old boy too.

"The IDF will not allow the cynical use of civilians, including women, children and people with disabilities as a cover for ongoing terrorist activity against Israeli civilians and IDF troops, and will continue to respond to any such attempts", said the IDF. He added, "This is evil in its purest form".

The Israeli military accused Gaza's Hamas leaders of orchestrating what it called a "serious and irregular" attack and said it would not tolerate similar activity in the future.

Israel maintains it has acted legitimately to protect its civilians from militants trying to breach the border. Israel refuses any right of return, fearing that the country would lose its Jewish majority.
