While still not explicitly admitting to the T-4 base strike, Israel Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the Jewish state would not back down in confronting creeping Iranian hegemony.

The foreign minister's special assistant for political affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, said Iran opposes employing chemical weapons by any party which is totally unacceptable.

Syria's government and its ally Iran have accused Israel of carrying out the attack on the Tiyas, or T-4, air base near Homs - something that Israel has not confirmed or denied.

After congratulating the Syrian Army for its recent victories in East Ghouta, east of Damascus, the Iranian representative noted that they are an overwhelming success for the Axis of Resistance in the region and are a defeat for the Zionist-U.S. project and its supporters.

Syria's state news agency says missiles have struck an air base in central Syria in the early hours of the day.

Russian Federation and Syria deny that chemical weapons were used.

Late Saturday, Syria's White Helmets, who act as first responders in rebel-held areas of Syria, said "poisonous chlorine gas" was used on Douma - the last sliver of territory held by the opposition.

The attack came as the final straw following weeks of sustained airstrikes that killed hundreds of people and injured thousands.

"The other side is seeing this American weakness loud and clear and, it is enhanced further by the Russians' embrace, giving these negative forces, led by Iran, a lot of confidence", an Israeli official said. It said the attack left people dead and wounded. He added that it also hit posts outside the base used by the Iranians and Iran-backed fighters. While Assad and his allies deny perpetrating chemical weapons attacks, the global community continues to collect damning evidence. He said that Washington had "a lot of options militarily" on Syria.

"A president who says he wants to get the hell out of Syria is not really in a position to threaten the military progress of the regime", he said.

Syria denies ever using chemical weapons during the war and says it eliminated its chemical arsenal under a 2013 agreement brokered by the USA and Russian Federation.

Israel has repeatedly warned that it will not accept its arch-foe Iran entrenching itself militarily in Syria.
