  • Local authorities take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

During the event, residents can safely dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medication.

The Drug Enforcement Administration of the U.S. Justice Department began coordinating the event twice a year in 2010 when it was reported enough prescriptions were written to medicate every adult in the country 24-7 for a month.

The drop-off location is in the East Hills Mall Parking lot in St. Joseph near the old Sears store.

After all, consumers are already taking on three costs - of medications, water treatment, and the effects of drug misuse.

The drop-off in Rochester will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at Mayo's Gonda Building. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

On Saturday, you can dispose your unused prescriptions at several collection sites in Spokane. It forms one strand in a web of growing national strategies aimed at combating what is widely considered to be the greatest drug crisis in US history, driven by opioid abuse, a deadly habit that claimed more than 64,000 lives a year ago.

Last fall Americans turned in 456 tons (912,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5,300 sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,300 of its state and local law enforcement partners.

The sheriff's department is participating in the one-day take-back effort by serving as a drop-off point, along with the MSP West Branch Post. "It nearly always comes back to a neighbor, friend, or a relative that they knew took something that they might be something they might want to use".
