And if the forecast is right, the Black Country and Staffordshire could face a similarly snowy scene this Easter. It equalled the average temperature in March 1947, with only March 1962 colder at 1.9°C (35°F).

Bochco launched such series as "Hill Street Blues" - a ground-breaking, Emmy-winning cop show - and "L.A. Law" for NBC before entering into a landmark 10-series deal with ABC in the late 1980s.

Steven Bochco grew up in Manhattan but traveled to Los Angeles after finishing college.

Although Bochco often consciously pressed against boundaries and seemed to delight in testing censors, he recalled that the breakthrough storytelling style of "Hill Street" was born more out of necessity than design. Complex, unpredictable and unfailingly humane. "He's a legend. All love to his family, R.I.P., and thank you".

And from writer/producer/director Judd Apatow: "Steven Bochco sat with Jake Kasdan and myself before we started Freaks and Geeks and let us grill him for advice".

The Walt Disney Company CEO and chairman Robert Iger stated on Twitter, "Today, our industry lost a visionary, a creative force, a risk taker, a witty, urbane storyteller with an uncanny ability to know what the world wanted. He was a great man and will forever be an inspiration". Steven Spielberg called him "a friend and a colleague" who he will "miss terribly", while former ABC Entertainment president Ted Harbert added, "Even though the network is supposed to be the authority, I always looked at Steven as my teacher, my mentor, the genius that led me to the best decision".

Bochco is survived by his sister Joanna Frank; his wife Dayna; his children Jesse, Sean, and Melissa; and a number of grandchildren.
