  • FILE Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg outlined new ways for users to be aware of the information the site stores

The latest development in the Facebook privacy controversy is that the company now faces a class action lawsuit claiming that its use of face recognition to identify users in photos. The Facebook chief had explained that Facebook collects data beyond what users share on their general profiles.

In a blog post, Facebook product management director David Baser went over how the company gathers user data from other websites and apps, what they do with the data and what controls users have over this data.

Facebook, which has also been scrutinized including a congressional questioning of founder Mark Zuckerberg, has said that up to 87 million people had data taken after they or one of their friends took a "This is your digital life" quiz created by researcher Alexander Kogan.

Firstly, Baser said the data helps run social plugins and logins to keep the app running properly, analytics for websites and developers and ads and related ad measurement tools.

"Facebook Audience Network enables other websites and apps to show ads from Facebook advertisers". He cited Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, Amazon and Pinterest as only five examples of platforms known to be surveilling users. "We've got to fix that", said Rep. Luján, referring to a process that forces non Facebook users to sign up for the service if they want to know what personal information the company has obtained. "This is because other apps and sites don't know who is using Facebook", Baser said in his post as part of Facebook's Hard Questions series.

Facebook has made it very clear that they're going through any and all apps that have access to large amounts of data, and evaluating them on how they're gathering and using it.

Nafta agreement could come in weeks, say Pence and Trudeau
Pence said he was "very hopeful" that Mexico, Canada and the US were close to an agreement on the negotiated trade pact. The unified front was presented during a highly anticipated meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S.

In return for that information, Facebook helps those websites serve up relevant ads or receive analytics that help them understand how people use their services.

It is true that Facebook has built a massive €200m data centre in Clonee, Co Meath, and that it has data centres all over the world, but the rub of the court battles led by Schrems is the legality of Facebook transferring European data to the US. Tough luck if you don't want "engaging" ads. The government questioned Cambridge Analytica on whether it had been "engaged in any assignment to utilise data of Indians" pertaining to the recent breach, and also the entities that had used its services.

Facebook continues to suggest that users have all the control over their data. This law is designed make tech companies like Google and Facebook comply with rules regarding the protection of their customers' data.

Brace for sticker shock, because for Facebook to offset the ad revenue of these rich hardcore users, it might have to charge more like $11 to $14 per month. These and many other companies offer advertising services too.

"I dunno what it is about Zuckerberg that makes the alien/robot etc comparisons so easy, I think it's the bug eyes and ears and complexion", wrote another. Dean Heller (R-NV), all Zuckerberg could say was that Facebook tries "to move as quickly as possible".
