If 4,000 troops were deployed, that would be about double the current United States military presence in Syria and about half as many as the number of USA troops in Iraq.

The National Guard troops are expected to help Border Patrol lower the number of people and contraband entering the USA through the southern border.

There is no end date for the deployment, Abbott said: "We may be in this for the long haul". "But it certainly is about border security".

McMaster plans to make a similar offer to Arizona's Republican governor in the next few days.

The US state of Arizona is deploying an additional 113 National Guard troops to the southern border to boost local law enforcement in countering narcotics and human trafficking and joining the core 225 already stationed there, media reported citing official statements.

Doug Ducey, a Republican, was present to send 225 troops on Monday.

Doug Ducey speaks to Arizona National Guard soldiers prior to their deployment to the Mexico border at the Papago Park Military Reservation, Monday, April 9, 2018, in Phoenix. The troops will be armed only in "circumstances that might require self-defense", and will not "perform law enforcement activities or interact with migrants" without Mattis' approval, according to the department memo.

Trump said last week that he would be sending up to 4,000 troops to the southern border until his proposed border wall was built.

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Hull says those troops are nowhere near deploying yet. Hull says the troops could help with air support, surveillance and repairs of infrastructure along the border so that Border Patrol agents have more time to enforce immigration law.

Troops from SC have helped out on the border before, offering night surveillance by plane and helping a decade ago to build part of the existing wall on the border, Livingston said.

Administration officers have talked about that rising numbers of people being caught on the southern border, whereas in keeping with seasonal traits now, require an instantaneous response. Evan Westrup, a spokesman for Brown, suggested the Related Press Monday that state officers are nonetheless reviewing Trump's troop request.

"The people that are suffering the drug overdoses, often times these products are coming over the border and through our state", he said.

Apprehensions are still well below their historical trends during the terms of former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, both of whom also deployed the Guard to the border.
