Apple has always found new ways to make its product stand out from the crowd. The technology likely won't be ready for consumers for at least two years, if Apple chooses to go forward with it, a person familiar with the work said.

The report also said Apple may be working on curved screens, which other phone makers including Samsung have incorporated into their designs.

Cupertino last week released iOS 11.3 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, promising the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, as well as a handful of new features.

The report specifically cites that Apple is testing an iPhone display capable of detecting gestures from finger movements without actually touching the display. Unlike Samsung Galaxy S9's display, the display on iPhones will be curving inwards gradually from top to the bottom of the front of the phone. Apple plans to take similar tech in their own direction. The iPhone X's OLED screen curves slightly at the bottom, but the shape is mostly invisible to the human eye. OLED displays are capable of being shaped into curves or even folded, unlike LCD screens, which were used in older iPhones. Unlike Samsung's technology that uses a sensor embedded in the top bezel, Apple is looking at integrating proximity sensing into displays. As a result, the Apple rumor mill has been working overtime lately. But Apple's long-lasting distaste for curved displays may be going the way of its hatred of big-screen phones - which was legendary back in the day before the first Plus iPhone launched.

So without further ado, below are a few curved iPhone concept images clearly inspired by Nokia's 8110 slider. The next year, the Galaxy Edge and Edge+ had curved screens on both sides.

Apple's move to develop these new technologies is to accelerate the iPhone's innovation in the smartphone market as competition heats up.
