Apple seems to be exploring curved iPhone screens and 'touchless' gestures

  • Apple's entry-level iPad tablet is now compatible with the company's Pencil stylus a device that once only worked with high-end iPad Pro models

According to various sources, the gestures feature for the iPhone is described as a hover-like gesture system "by moving their finger close to the screen without actually tapping it".

A new Bloomberg report from the often reliable Mark Gurman details two major changes that could be on the horizon for Apple's upcoming smartphone. It's unclear exactly how this feature would work, but it likely involves "hovering" over specific user-interface elements and won't be the core way of interacting with the smartphone.

Apple is developing touchless iPhones with curved displays. Apple introduced pressure-sensitive displays with the addition of 3D Touch following the release of the iPhone 6s and the Apple Watch, though few apps take advantage of the feature in a way that makes sense. Unlike the display on the Samsung Galaxy S9, this new iPhone's display will curve from inwards from top to bottom (kind of like a banana).

Citing people with knowledge of the matter, a report in Bloomberg states that Apple is working on touchless gesture control and curved screens for future iPhones. Apple's latest flagship curves slightly at the bottom, but Bloomberg points out that this is mostly invisible to users.

OLED, or organic light emitting diode, displays can be shaped into curves or even folded, unlike the less-flexible LCD screen technology used in prior iPhones. Apple is still in the early development stages with those technologies.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. Smartphones have become increasingly similar as Apple, Samsung Electronics, Google, and Huawei Technologies adopt features like full screens, advanced cameras, and facial recognition at roughly the same time.

The Samsung Air Gestures system relies on hand-wave motions, which are detected by a motion sensor on the phone's bezel.
