At least one Army jawan and three civilians were killed in an encounter in South Kashmir's Kulgam district on Wednesday. A security force officer said the militants managed to escape from the hideout.

Three security force personnel were injured in the initial exchange of firing.

However the police in a statement said that the civilians were killed in 'crossfire'. The condition of two of them was said to be critical. Informed sources said over 40 civilians were injured in street clashes.

Four teenagers were killed and several others were injured when security forces allegedly opened fire and fired pellets to disperse demonstrators, who tried to march towards the encounter site.

"Army had even used helicopter gunships to fight out the militants".

Student protests also rocked Kashmir University in Srinagar and Bandipora town, also in north Kashmir.

The killing of four civilians and injuring at least 70 people in Kulgam has evoked widespread protests in the length and breadth of Kashmir with Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) calling for complete shutdown on Thursday.

Wednesday's incidents come close on the heels of days of disturbances witnessed in Kashmir Valley in the aftermath of the killing of 14 militants and five civilians as security forces stepped up counterinsurgency measures in the first week of April.
