  • “Acts of genocide” suspected against Rohingya in Myanmar – U.N

Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her long campaign against the country's military dictatorship, was awarded the Holocaust Museum's Elie Wiesel award six years ago "for her courageous leadership and great personal sacrifice in resisting tyranny and advancing the freedom and dignity of the Burmese people". The award is given to "an internationally prominent individual whose actions have advanced the Museum's vision of a world where people confront hatred, prevent genocide and promote human dignity".

Suu Kyi is Myanmar's state counselor and foreign minister. ". It is true that Aung San Suu Kyi lacks real power over the military, which retains a quarter of seats in parliament and runs other institutions".

But Aung San Suu Kyi's global reputation has collapsed over the Rohingya massacres and she has been criticised as an apologist for the purges.

The release stated that last November, the museum released a detailed finding based on research on the crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, termed as "mounting evidence of genocide" committed by the Myanmar military against Rohingya civilians since October 2016.

The museum announced Wednesday that the Elie Wiesel Award given to Suu Kyi in 2012 would be rescinded.

But her worldwide reputation has plummeted over the Rohingya massacres and she has been criticised as an apologist for the purges. But many Rohingya living in the crowded, unsanitary camps have said they do not want to return to Rakhine after fleeing atrocities including murder, rape and arson attacks on their homes.

"Aung San Suu Kyi came to power as a voice of the oppressed, having spent years as a democracy champion, kept under house arrest by Burma's repressive generals".

Still, he told CNN's Jake Tapper that the idea that Trump colluded with Russian Federation would amount to "looking down on them". Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was also at the meeting along with Donald Trump's son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner.

Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy have refused to cooperate with United Nations investigators, fed hate attacks on the Rohingya and denied reporters access to areas where alleged abuses have taken place, the museum said in a letter to Suu Kyi that was posted on its website.

In a report published last December 12, the doctors' group said the deaths of 71.7 percent or 6,700 Rohingya were caused by violence.

Two Reuters journalists, who were investigating the killing of 10 Rohingya men and their burial in a mass grave, were arrested and face 14 years in prison.

Ahead of Gilmour's trip, Myanmar's army deployed additional troops to the border with Bangladesh with the apparent aim of driving about 6000 Rohingya refugees staying in no-man's land into Bangladeshi territory.

The Myanmar military's campaign to methodically burn Rohingya villages, seen here from Bangladesh in September, has prompted accusations of ethnic cleansing.

In its letter, the Holocaust Museum acknowledged "the hard situation you must face in confronting decades of military misrule". However, the military's orchestration of the crimes against Rohingya and the severity of the atrocities in recent months demand that you use your moral authority to address this situation.
