  • This Is The Trump Administration's New Proposal To Ban Bump Stocks

But when a bump stock is attached to the weapon, the gun's recoil is used to "bump" the trigger back to the shooter's finger, making the gun fire at a much faster rate. ATF also issued classification decisions concluding that other bump-stock-type devices were not machineguns, including a device submitted by the manufacturer of the bump-stock-type devices used in the Las Vegas shooting.

"Not because they liked it, but because the law did not permit them to prohibit it", Winkler told the fact-checking organization, which explored the issue after the National Rifle Association said in October that the Obama administration approved bump stocks on two occasions.

- President Trump announced that the administration plans to ban bump stocks and other devices that can modify weapons, making them more risky and faulting the Obama administration for the legalization. A 1986 law bans the sale of machine guns manufactured after 1986 and restricts the sale of such guns before that year.

On Friday, a Department of Justice statement said if the rule change is made, bump stocks and similar devices would be "required to surrender, destroy or otherwise render the devices permanently inoperable".

The Trump administration has formally proposed a complete ban on bump stocks, which effectively convert assault rifles into machine guns, on the eve of a nationwide protest for firearms control.

Under US law, machine guns are officially banned.

The Justice Department has proposed a new regulation effectively banning bump stocks, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Friday.

In 2010, ATF decided it could not regulate bump stocks because officials said the devices did not meet the definition of a machine gun. "As I promised, today the Department of Justice will issue the rule banning BUMP STOCKS with a mandated comment period", Trump wrote.

President Donald Trump announced the regulation in a Twitter message a day before the so-called March for Our Lives, which was organized by young people after the mass slayings at a Parkland, Fla., high school.

The proposed change must undergo a public comment period before a final regulation is implemented.

Under former President Barack Obama, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives considered banning the accessories but concluded doing so would require an act of Congress.
