  • More sources say Battlefield 2 is set in WWII and is coming this year

This upcoming Battlefield game, however, will be a fully-fledged game, likely featuring both a single player and multiplayer option as previous Battlefield games have before it. Plus, independent sources which have confirmed the title and setting to reporters at Venture Beat.

Battlefield 1 was a big success for EA, though it's about time for the next game in the series to take the mantle.

Considering that the last game was Battlefield 1, it's odd to see EA call the next game Battlefield V. The reasons for the inconsistency in nomenclature are unknown at this juncture.

Per VentureBeat, the new game was originally going to be titled Battlefield 2, but, at some point, the decision was made to go with the somewhat-confusing Battlefield V title (this will actually be the 11th DICE-developed Battlefield game).

Japanese police question USA tourist over severed head
The tourist was identified as 26-year-old Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar by The Asahi Shimbun and other Japanese media outlets. Two days later, police found a severed head in a suitcase in another room that Bayraktar had rented in Osaka's Nishinari Ward.

This also follows on the success of later year's Call of Duty: WWII, which sold more than any CoD for a number of years. According to VentureBeat, the next entry in EA's series will be called Battlefield V and will indeed be heading back to WWII. Of course, we still wouldn't mind if all this turns out to be a ruse to cover up the impending reveal of Battlefield: Bad Company 3.

The next Battlefield will launch on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in late 2018. The first was 2002's Battlefield: 1942 and the last was 2009's Battlefield 1943, though the latter game only released on consoles. "They knew they wanted to get away from the modern and near-future settings for a while", Jeff Grubb reports, "but it also didn't want to burn the WWII setting right away".

We've reached out to EA for comment.
