The FDA Is Already Working On Next Season's Flu Vaccine

  • America's Nightmare Flu Season Is Finally Coming to an End

By looking closely at the available data and applying the lessons we learn each flu season to the vaccine development process, we offer the greatest chance of developing vaccines that even more effectively prevent the flu in the future. After weeks of influenza unlike anything the country had seen in nearly a decade, the Centers for Disease Control said last week that flu cases may have finally peaked nationally.

During the best flu seasons, the vaccine can prevent up to 60 percent of people who get the shot from ever getting sick.

"As it's turning out, the majority of the kids nationally who died from the flu did not get the vaccine", said Douglas.

Against all types of influenza, its effectiveness is 36 percent; among children aged 6 months through 8 years, its effectiveness is 59 percent. Meanwhile, public officials are trying to make it clear that the vaccine itself can't cause the flu epidemic. The flu is now widespread in most of the country and could last until May.

The current influenza season has been especially hard, causing widespread illness that has affected all fifty states and resulted in a record number of hospitalizations.

While that finding isn't too far off from the vaccine effectiveness seen against H3N2 in previous years, we need to take new steps to improve vaccine efficacy against H3N2.

West Ham had threatened before that when Loris Karius just managed to claw Marko Arnautovic's effort on to the crossbar. Just as the Hammers started to get a little more of the ball, Liverpool took the lead through a header from Emre Can .

"That's why we (still) encourage vaccinations ... even if you already got H3N2", she said. "Unfortunately, there will be another flu season to come".

The most recent statewide data show intensive care unit admissions and outpatient visits for influenza have decreased, according to an Illinois Department of Public Health report.

The second shot may be necessary if parents have a child under eight-years-old who got vaccinated for the first time this season.

So the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is bent on making sure next year's flu shot works better, agency commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said in a statement released Monday. The adjuvanted influenza vaccine contains an ingredient meant to boost the immune system's response to the vaccine while high dose vaccines contain four times as much of the influenza material or antigen as standard vaccines.

The most common strain of flu now affecting people in Arizona, known as H3N2, is linked to a strain kids were exposed to in 1968, according to Michael Worobey, the head of the ecology and evolutionary biology department at the UA. Or perhaps culturing the vaccine via cells, compared to the conventional method of egg-based culturing, might make a difference, he suggested. Both are misconceptions, including pregnant women shouldn't get vaccinated and the vaccine actually gives you flu.
