While last week's column explored why "Black Panther" was so big so fast out of the gate, its second-weekend success comes from some additional factors.

Internationally, Black Panther added a further $83.8 million to take its worldwide gross to $704 million after just two weeks.

Unsurprisingly, those second-weekend numbers come with their own set of records.

Black Panther also saw a smaller dip than most Marvel movies do between its first and second weekend, falling only 46 percent from its $201 million opening frame. Others are "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($149.2 million), "Jurassic World" ($106.6 million) and "The Avengers" ($103.1 million).

Enough for a dominant weekend victory, the figure also brings the film's cumulative gross past $400 million. While it isn't breaking records offshore the same way it is in the U.S., Black Panther is exceeding expectations and has a strong shot at outgrossing a number of Marvel titles, as well as some DC superhero offerings. It seems to be just a matter of time before the film surpasses the $1 billion mark.

Disney's "Black Panther" sunk its claws into the top spot once again this weekend at the North American box office, taking an estimated US$108 million, industry estimates showed Sunday. If the movie surpasses $413 million, which doesn't look hard at this point, Black Panther will rub shoulders with The Dark Knight Rises ($448 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($458 million), The Dark Knight ($534 million) and The Avengers ($623 million), Forbes reports.
