President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on steel, aluminum imports

  • This time, China can fight back against tariffs

The US will impose tariffs of 25 per cent on imported steel and 10 per cent on imported aluminium, which will take effect this month.

The scramble over the tariffs has propelled the White House into further disarray over the past week.

"We're not trying to blow up the world". But Mr. Trump's trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, has failed to ask the W.T.O.to convene a panel of judges to hear the case, effectively suspending it. Mr. Lighthizer's office declined to answer questions about the case.

The president also appeared to criticize China's alleged theft of intellectual property, saying, "The U.S.is acting swiftly on Intellectual Property theft.

It's been an assault", Trump said at the White House where he was joined by steel and aluminum workers holding white hard hats.

The European Commission had already warned on Wednesday that if the USA went ahead with its plan, it would retaliate with increased tariffs on American goods such as Bourbon whiskey, Levis jeans, Florida orange juice and peanut butter.

"We will continue to urge the administration to narrow this policy so that it is focused only on those countries and practices that violate trade law", said Ryan.

That scenario, Tom Donohue said, would endanger the economic momentum from the GOP tax cuts and Trump's rollback of regulations. "But we've reached a situation in which the preliminary skirmishes have become serious", she added.

Trump said he is open to modifying tariffs for some countries - the Trump administration will allow any country that has a security relationship with the Trump administration to discuss potential modifications to "address the threatened impairment of the national security caused by imports from that country", the White House official added.

The carveouts for Mexico and Canada will be dependent on progress in negotiations to update the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Trump has promised to cut ties to trade deals considered unfavorable to USA interests as part of his campaign pledge.

"We will go to the WTO, possibly with some other friends", Ms Malmstrom told a Brussels conference on Friday.

There are a handful of Democrats who are on board with Trump's move, though. Sen. "He may be a globalist, but I still like him".

But countries had expressed outrage at his plans, and experts warned of new trade wars. The president campaigned on a promise to bring back American jobs and put USA interests first when it comes to global trade.

If the countries providing 25, 30 or even 40 percent of the steel coming into the United States - it would be 40 percent if Japan and South Korea were also exempted - are not subject to the new tariffs, that would not seem to be much of a boon to USA steel manufacturers.

The president plans to rally Republicans in western Pennsylvania on Saturday in support of Rick Saccone, who faces Democrat Conor Lamb in a March 13 special House election.

Confusion reigned in Washington overnight, with contradictory reports sparking a "will he or won't he" guessing game as Trump's leanings seemed to change by the hour.
