Larry Page's Kitty Hawk reveals autonomous flying taxis

Eight years in the making, Cora sports a series of rotors on each wing that grants it the ability to take off and land vertically, like a helicopter.

As it turns out, Kitty Hawk is financed by Alphabet chief executive and Google co-founder Larry Page whose ambition is to beat other companies such as Uber to the punch and launch a fully-fledged autonomous flying taxi service.

Due to its relative isolation from other nations and long stretches of uninhabited land, New Zealand is the flawless testing ground for Kitty Hawk to prove its tech works without getting in the way of commercial planes or endangering people on the ground. Once it's reached its destination, the craft lands helicopter-style. Its name is Cora.

"This aircraft represents the evolution of the transport eco system to one that responds to a global challenge around traffic and congestion, and is kinder to the planet", she said.

According to Kitty Hawk's website, Cora is created to help you save time by "soaring over traffic", and bring the airport to you. It has the potential to transform spaces like rooftops and parking lots into places to take off right from your neighborhood. According to the video, the Cora is fully automated and fully electric, and requires no piloting skills to operate.

Kitty Hawk Corporation has credited Innovative Partnerships as part of the reason it is testing its revolutionary air taxi technology in New Zealand.

But developers say it is much quieter, meaning it could transport passengers in urban areas using rooftops and auto parks as landing pads. In the event of a complete loss of power to all 12 fans, the Cora is also equipped with a parachute.

A pilot-less "air taxi" supported by tech investor Larry Page - called Cora - was unveiled this week.

Currently, there's no timeline as to when Cora will be available to the public and no details on the eventual pricing for rides in the vehicle. Being that the plane is fairly quiet, it could help make the idea of flying taxis more appealing, being that city residents won't have to constantly be disturbed by the loud sounds of traditional planes. Once in the air, it uses a single propeller to fly like an airplane.
