  • KT Naveen Kumar has been taken into custody in connection with the murder of Gauri Lankesh

Kumar, who hails from Birur town in Chikkamagaluru district, was arrested on February 18 by the SIT of Karnataka Police after he was identified with the help of CCTV footage.

A source close to the investigation told TNM, "During the course of investigation, we have had reason to believe that the group which is suspected of killing Gauri Lankesh was planning to kill KS Bhagwan next".

(G.N.S) Dt. 10 Bengaluru The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Gauri Lankesh murder made its first arrest in the case on Friday.

On Saturday, the SIT officials met in Criminal Investigations Department (CID) office to discuss the future course of the probe.

Lankesh, the editor and publisher of a weekly newspaper and advocate of secular views, was shot in the head and chest outside her house in Bengaluru in September 2017.

Kumar was yesterday produced before a court here which remanded him in police custody in the case till 13 March for further interrogation.

The protests came as the "MeToo" movement targeting sexual abuse and harassment spreads around the world. Federally, only 26 per cent of Members of Parliament are women .

The SIT also charged Kumar with plotting to assassinate Mysuru-based writer and rationalist K S Bhagawan.

The SIT officials on Friday named two accused in the Gauri Lankesh murder case and submitted details of the second accused who is yet to be arrested. The locals in the area are reported to have said that they have heard of Naveen and his organisation, but it was no different from other Hindu fringe groups that has sprung up over the last few years. Just because he was in possession of the book does not mean he had links to Sanathan Sanstha.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders Yeddyurappa and Shobha Karandlaje have slammed the Congress and said that the party was framing Naveen in the Gauri Lankesh murder case because of his connections with Hindu outfits.

After going through the murder cases of Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and M M Kalburgi, the bullets used to kill Gauri match only with the one used in the killing of Kalburgi. The court, however, granted him bail in the arms case.

Kumar's family has maintained that he was innocent and in no way connected to the case.
