The Mahatma Gandhi statue at Taliparamba here was vandalised by an unidentified person on Thursday morning.

Taking a serious view of the desecration of statues in various parts of the country, the Home Ministry on Wednesday issued a second advisory, its second in the day, holding district magistrates and superintendents of police "personally responsible" for such incidents of vandalism.

According to reports, the man crawled up the statue and destroyed a spectacle and a garland.

A case has been registered in this connection and investigation is on to identify the culprit, police said. He allegedly hurled a stone at the statue before leaving the scene. Another disturbing instance of vandals overstepping their bounds was when some of them smeared red pain on the statue of BR Ambedkar, Wednesday night. According to reports, Chennai police took cognizance of the matter and rushed to the spot at around 9 am.

The attack on Mahatma Gandhi's statue come after statues of Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov or Lenin, were vandalised in Tripura's Belonia town on Tuesday. Reports suggest that the police are now on the lookout for the people who defaced the statue.

A bust of Dravidian movement founder EV Ramasamy Periyar was also desecrated in Tamil Nadu's Vellore, triggering widespread protests across the state.

Amid the ongoing spate of incidents targeting statues and busts of known figures, a statue of Hindu deity Lord Hanuman was desecrated in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, sparking tension in the area.

The police confirmed that there was no political motive behind the incident in Taliparamba.
