Facebook to keep one news feed

Last October, The Guardian first reported that Facebook meant to split its algorithmic News Feed into two: one for non-promoted posts from Pages and publishers (called "Explore"), and one for your friends and family. When news about the split news feed first surfaced, it sparked concerns about the growing power of the social media giant, and how publishers would be affected. One particular incident took place in December in Slovakia, one of the six countries in which Facebook was testing the News Feed division.

However, FB soon found that people were less satisfied with the change and it didn't really help them connect more. As such, the social network is ending the tests, which have faced criticism for making the company's fake news problem even worse.

Citizens in these countries saw posts from official news organisations removed from their own news feeds as part of a desire to focus on content written by friends and family.

That is still the priority, but separating the two groups completely isn't the way to accomplish that.

Mosseri said this initiative will "better address the feedback we heard from people who said they want to see more from friends and family".

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled other changes to the Facebook News Feed in the past two months to fight sensationalism and prioritise posts from friends and family.

"You gave us our answer: People don't want two separate feeds", Mossesri said in a blog post.

Mosseri noted (and as most publishers are painfully aware), Facebook made significant changes to its algorithm earlier this year that have already been used to privilege posts from friends and family. Going forward, Mosseri said the company will begin "updating the way we evaluate where to test new products, and how we communicate about them".

Facebook has announced that its experiment with having two News Feeds has ended.

Launched last October, Facebook's Explore feed was designed as a separate feed for content from publishers and public figures they might be interested in based their own interests.

Mark Zuckerberg made it his new year's resolution to clean up the site after the discovery of 470 fake pages and accounts with connections to Russian Federation that bought ads during the 2016 USA elections.
