The roster purge has officially started.
The Eagles are now projected to be about $14 million over the National Football League salary cap of $177.2 million and need to reach that figure on Wednesday.
The Panthers have agreed to trade for veteran Philadelphia Eagles wideout Torrey Smith in exchange for third-round cornerback Daryl Worley, according to a league source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trade is not yet official.
The decision to move Smith likely came due to the Eagles believing they could acquire additional talent to fill his spot at a more inexpensive price. Worley is on a rookie deal and set to count $650,000 toward the cap.
The deal can not become official until the new league year opens Wednesday at 4 p.m.
