  • Kathleen Hartnett White of the Texas Public Policy Foundation arrives at Trump Tower Nov. 28 2016 in New York

While advancing a book she co-wrote in 2016, Fueling Freedom: Exposing the Mad War on Energy, Hartnett White commended non-renewable energy source vitality for doing "work that we generally would need to do [ourselves]".

President Donald Trump announced Hartnett White's nomination in October and re-submitted her nomination to the Senate in January.

The White House will withdraw the nomination of Kathleen Hartnett White, the former Texas environmental official tapped to lead the Council on Environmental Quality, a White House official said Sunday.

When Senator Ben Cardin, Democrat of Maryland, asked White if she believes climate change is real, she said "I am uncertain".

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.

White has a long history of questioning established science on climate change and once dismissed the idea that carbon dioxide is a pollutant and calling it "the gas of life on this planet" - comments that drew criticism from environmentalists who opposed her nomination.

While most of President Trump's nominations to environmental policy posts have been approved, Congress has declined to take up the cause of Hartnett White. "I jumped ahead. Climate change is of course real". The official was not authorized to discuss personnel decisions by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Senate sent her nomination back to the White House - along with several others' - at the end of previous year.

She previously railed against her own party for failing to campaign on the idea that the United States has "almost no real environmental problems". Carper called withdrawing White's nomination "the right thing to do" and urged the Trump administration to nominate a "thoughtful environmental and public health champion to lead this critical office in the federal government". "White", Carper said in a Saturday statement.

White also worked at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a right-leaning think tank where she was a senior fellow. That includes Andrew R. Wheeler, a coal lobbyist, to be deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.
