Ship Captain: Robert Wagner Drank Whiskey Instead Of Looking For Natalie Wood

  • Robert Wagner Named Person of Interest in Natalie Wood's Drowning Death

Last week it was revealed that Wagner - the last person to see Wood alive - was a person of interest in the case.

"We have reached out to him like two or three times - through him and through his attorney - and he has refused to talk to us", Lt. John Corina of the L.A. Sheriff's Department said.

He also said Wagner did not appear aware of the urgency of the situation, once Wood disappeared.

"We've interviewed a lot of new people,"Lt. John Corina said".

He told CBS's 48 Hours: "As we've investigated the case over the last six years, I think he's (Wagner) more of a person of interest now".

Law enforcement is now seeking more witnesses in the death of the Hollywood icon. The sheriff's office issued a statement Thursday noting this is still a suspicious death investigation and that there is not enough evidence to make an arrest. "We're still just trying to figure out what happened".

Wood was on board the Splendour with Wagner, Christopher Walken, who was her co-star in the film "Brainstorm", after having dinner at a restaurant on Catalina Island.

"There were bruises on Natalie Wood's body", Corina said.

They also fear slippery slopes and know that the socialization of one industry could mean that theirs is next. And even then, insurers talk in terms of billing codes, while doctors deal with diagnoses and outcomes.

"I haven't seen him tell the details that match ... all the other witnesses in this case", Corina adds. She drowned November 29, 1981, while on a boat off the coast of Santa Catalina, Calif. Investigators at the time believed her death was suspicious - her body had bruises - but ultimately ruled it as accidental. At the time, the coroner ruled that Wood had died from drowning as well as hypothermia, speculating that she might have had an accident when getting into the dinghy because of the alcohol, which would have had an intensified effect because of both the painkiller and the motion sickness pill. Corina said the sheriff's department will continue to examine the case for as long as there are any leads to pursue.

"We want to find out how she went into the water", Corina said.

Wagner was at the time one of the industry's main leading men, and later became one of the biggest stars on TV with shows such as Hart To Hart and Switch. "I tried to talk to him past year and he looked me in the eye and said that he's cooperated with the police and he spoke with them". After the actress was found deceased, a two-week investigation was launched and ultimately deemed the incident to be accidental.

"Yes of course we want to talk to Robert Wagner, you bet", Corina said."The version of events he's portrayed in the media, I think... he told the original investigators and what he's portrayed since then, really don't add up to what we've found and what we've found talking to other people that weekend". The truth is important and this news isn't a minor thing - I don't have to say how important this is.

"Mr. Wagner has fully cooperated over the last 30 years in the investigation of the accidental drowning of his wife in 1981", Berk said at the time.

At the time, Corina said Walken gave a prepared statement and spoke to detectives for an hour.

He claimed that Wagner's story has changed over the years, and said that Wagner did not immediately attempt to look for her once he determined that she was not on the boat.
