  • New Jersey man sentenced to life in prison for planting bombs including one that injured more than 30 people

Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized USA citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in New Jersey, injured 30 people when one of his homemade bombs exploded in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on a September night in 2016.

Pauline Nelson accepted Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman's invitation Tuesday for victims of the September 17, 2016 attack to speak at the sentencing hearing for the Afghanistan-born Ahmad Khan Rahimi.

The verdict resulted in a mandatory life sentence.

In court, Rahimi echoed his father's remarks, seeming to blame the Federal Bureau of Investigation for not stopping him sooner.

"Less than a year-and-a-half after his attacks, Rahimi has now been tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison", said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman.

Since his arrest, two other lone-wolf attackers have carried out bombings in NY.

Defense attorney Xavier Donaldson said that Rahami had once aspired to be a police officer and worked as a security guard after studying criminal justice at a community college.

Prosecutors had used a Rahimi diary as evidence that he wanted to be a part of jihad, but in court Tuesday Rahimi didn't take responsibility for the bombing.

Other buildings slanted at alarming degrees and rescuers used ladders, ropes and cranes to move residents to safety. "Rescuers will seize the "golden 72 hours of rescue time" to make an all-out effort for rescue", he added.

He was convicted of charges including the use and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, bombing a public place, destroying property by means of fire or explosives, and using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence - namely, the use and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction.

Using fingerprints found inside the unexploded devices, authorities tied the Afghan-born US citizen to a series of bombings that injured 30 across the area.

On Monday, in an interview with WNBC, Rahimi's father called his son a terrorist, but said Rahimi is glad no one died in the incidents.

Rahimi is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday by a federal judge in Manhattan.

Rahimi also detonated a bomb at a charity 5K race in Seaside Park, N.J., earlier that morning - but no one was hurt.

This story corrects to show the location of the New Jersey pipe bombing explosion was in Seaside Park, not Seaside Heights. He also planted a second bomb that failed to explode.

"Rahimi's conviction and sentencing are victories for New York City and our nation in the fight against terror".
