"I can say that our family is beyond appreciative for the outpouring of love and support we've received today", she expressed. Duncan said the fight against injustice was her brother's "personal battle", according to a report by The Root from a Tuesday evening vigil at North Charleston City Hall.

Moye was active in the movement for racial justice after the police killing of Walter Scott. "I've never met anyone more committed and hardworking than him".

"Muhiyyidin was a warrior for this community and a lovely soul", said one person who donated to help cover d'Baha's funeral costs.

"I can only say, at this time, that I'm keeping his family and community in prayer", Newsome said. "The last thing he said to me was that he was doing community work out of town and that he was learning so that he could come back to Charleston and help empower the people".

New Orleans Police said the shooting happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. and said Moye suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh. Reports say d'Baha was shot in New Orleans early Tuesday morning (Feb. 6), eventually dying of his wounds.

A TV news crew filming nearby captured D'baha as he made a running leap, grabbed the flag from a protester's hands, and then briefly tussled with Secessionist Party members before police could reach him.

Police found a blood trail that extended across several streets and bullet fragments in the 1900 block of Bienville Street, about three blocks away from where Moye was found lying on the sidewalk and asking for help, the report states. New Orleans-based crime analyst Jeff Asher said that is one more murder than was reported during the first 37 days of 2017.

An attorney for the police department said that the incident report citing aggravated battery was the only one available, and that "the signal was recently changed to a homicide".

On February 22, 2017, Bree Newsome - the woman arrested for scaling a 30-foot flagpole and removing a Confederate flag at the SC statehouse in 2015 - was addressing a crowd that included members of Black Lives Matter as well as protesters from the state's Secessionist Party.
