  • Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand the Justice Department's No. 3 official is planning to step down at a time of turmoil in the agency

Trump may also want to fire Rosenstein, the former Central Intelligence Agency official argued, because he's a witness to the obstruction of justice case against the president because he wrote one of the initial letters justifying the firing of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

But, amid Trump's recent attacks against the Justice Department, Sessions announced late Friday that Brand is leaving for a job in the private sector.

Brand, the Associate Attorney General, would be next in line to oversee Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's election interference, if President Donald Trump fired Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Brand's resignation was first reported by the New York Times. "She has played a critical role in helping us accomplish our goals as a department-taking on human trafficking, protecting free speech on campus, and fighting sexual harassment in public housing", Attorney General Jeff Sessions says in a statement.

3 official at the Justice Department, is stepping down after less than nine months in the job, according to a person familiar with the matter.

"Thank you for your strong leadership here at the department", Sessions said.

Firing Rosenstein would be a colossal move by Trump. The reason for her departure is unclear, and her exit caught senior Justice Department officials by surprise.

Trump, who has openly lamented his inability to influence Justice Department decisions, has stepped up his criticism in recent weeks, fueled by the release of a politically explosive memo alleging the FBI abused its surveillance powers in the Russian Federation investigation.

Brand holds an extensive portfolio overseeing the Department's antitrust and civil rights divisions.

More recently, the Washington Post reported Trump had seen a controversial memo written by House Republicans based on classified material as a vehicle he could use to fire Rosenstein.

Last summer on Twitter, Trump called Sessions "beleaguered" and "very weak, and at a news conference in the Rose Garden said he was "disappointed in Sessions".
