John Perry Barlow, best known in the music world as the lyricist for several Grateful Dead songs, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 7).

"He always saw the internet as a fundamental place of freedom, where voices long silenced can find an audience and people can connect with others regardless of physical distance", Cindy Cohn, the EFF's executive director, said in a statement.

In his work as a digital activist, Barlow was influenced by the "tapers welcome" philosophy of the Grateful Dead, which famously invited fans to make their own recordings of concerts.

Barlow's famous piece, the "Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace", written in February 1996 - shortly after the passage of the Telecommunications Reform Act, which he decried - has taken on a new meaning today as the internet has taken over the world.

Bobby picked John Perry Barlow, a man with whom his friendship dated back to their high school days in Colorado.

Barlow was cofounder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit that advocates for civil liberties in the digital age.

Rachel Brand, No 3 justice department official, reportedly planning to resign
The reason for her departure is unclear, and her exit caught senior Justice Department officials by surprise. Brand holds an extensive portfolio overseeing the Department's antitrust and civil rights divisions.

The essay was credited with helping popularize the term "cyberspace", coined by science-fiction writer William Gibson in 1982, and began with a utopian flourish: "Governments of the Industrial World, you tired giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. He made a conscious decision to focus on the latter".

In addition to his cyber activism, Barlow was a poet, essayist and an early lyricist for the Grateful Dead. As someone who spent the past 27 years working with him at EFF, I can say that nothing could be further from the truth. Barlow usually collaborated with singer/guitarist Bob Weir, but also co-wrote with keyboardist Brett Mydland.

He graduated in 1969 at Wesleyan University in CT with a degree in comparative religion.

"Dead classics like "Cassidy", "Mexicali Blues", Black-Throated Wind", and "Looks Like Rain" as well as dozens more were penned by him, Rolling Stone noted.

He is survived by his three daughters, Amelia, Anna and Leah, with ex-wife Elaine.

More than a defender of the internet, Barlow had many guises in an uneven evolution from an only child whose nearest neighbour lived four miles away to a corporate consultant and citizen of the world.
