  • Opposition supporters outside the Supreme Court in Male after Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency

The President of the Maldives has declared a state of emergency in order to investigate a "coup" - with the country's opposition leader and two senior judges placed under arrest.

In addition to Nasheed, the other top political leaders named in the order included Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim, religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla, former defence minister Mohamed Nazim, former vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor and Gayoom's lawmaker son Faris Maumoon.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and another judge, Ali Hameed, were arrested after President Yameen declared emergency Monday.

That move was quickly followed by the three remaining court justices who are still free annulling the court's decision to drop charges against the nine opposition figures, according to a statement on the court's website.

President Abdulla Yameen has accused the court of overstepping its authority, and says he has established the state of emergency to "determine how deep this plot, this coup goes". "We are asking for a physical presence", Nasheed tweeted.

"We hope relevant parties can properly resolve the differences through dialogue and consultation and restore normal order as soon as possible and maintain national and social stability", said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang. The government announced a 15-day state of emergency Monday night, giving it sweeping powers, including to make arrests, search and seize property and restrict freedom of assembly.

India said on Tuesday said it is "disturbed" by the declaration of emergency in Maldives amid the face-off between the government and the Supreme Court even as it looks at contingency measures with a range of options to deal with the evolving situation in the island nation.

Early on Tuesday opposition leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was charged with bribery and attempting to overthrow the government, his lawyer said on Twitter.

"Government continues to carefully monitor the situation", the statement said.

Gayoom was president from 1978 to 2008, when the Maldives became a multiparty democracy.

Amnesty International urged Yameen against using the state of emergency as a cover for rights abuses and called for the immediate release of the judges.

The Maldives is an archipelago of more than 1,000 islands with fewer than 400,000 citizens, more than one-third of them living in the crowded capital city, Male.
