A man with a history of violent behavior intentionally crashed a auto filled with gasoline containers into a CT hospital emergency room yesterday and then set himself on fire, authorities said.

Jim Hite, Director of Protective Services and Security, says that without the quick response by staff and first responders, this could have been much worse.

The driver, Steven Ellam, 27, of Middletown, was critically burned in the crash and fire at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown.

"We evacuated patients from our [emergency department] to other portions of our hospital where they will be attended to", Giuffrida said.

It didn't take long to realize those in the emergency waiting room were not the only ones at risk.

Upon arriving at the scene, the Middletown Fire Department found several gas canisters in the vehicle, the contents of which are now undergoing testing.

Ellam was subsequently transported via Life Star helicopter to the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital.

Municipal, state and federal bomb squads checked the hospital and the suspect's residence, Police Chief William McKenna said.
