  • iOS 11.3 will let iPhone users switch off Apple's performance throttling 'feature'

It's not yet known who leaked the code and what their motives for leaking it was. Github was quick to comply with the request, and removed the iOS source code post from the repository of the user.

In a statement to Apple Insider, Apple said: "Old source code from three years ago appears to have been leaked, but by design the security of our products doesn't depend on the secrecy of our source code". Although Apple hasn't directly commented on the breach's authenticity, its expedited DMCA request strongly implies the source was genuine code.

One of Apple's most guarded secrets has reportedly been leaked online by an anonymous source. "It is not open-source", said the legal document.

The plan was originally to make sure that the code never left the initial circle of five friends, but apparently the code spread beyond the original group sometime a year ago.

"Apple iOS is widely viewed as the most trusted mobile operating system out there".

"On the other hand, if this does result in more exploits, we'll end up with more secure devices in the long term as Apple fixes the discovered vulnerabilities".

Mr Kays said that Apple has taken important steps to improve the protection of its products "so users of its latest devices don't need to be unduly concerned by the release of the iBoot firmware". Before the iBoot leak, ZioShiba had been inactive on GitHub for at least seven months. This means that updated devices are not completely at risk to vulnerabilities hackers might find in the source code.

iOS bootloader The leak could be of value to "jailbreakers" who install third-party software on iPhones and iPads. Although the source was only available for a short time, it's likely that hundreds of people viewed and downloaded the material while it was available. Once the phone is jailbroken, users are at will to run the software that are otherwise not allowed, or delete the apps that come preloaded on the device. The former employee apparently took "all sorts of Apple internal tools and whatnot", according to one of the individuals who had originally received the code, including additional source code that was apparently not included in the initial leak.
