  • Amazon removes lockscreen offers and ads from Prime Exclusive phones

Certain phones, like the LG G6+, are only available on Amazon's Exclusive Phone program. True, Amazon itself benefits from selling these devices, but ultimately, the true winners are consumers. Now that many phones have face recognition and fingerprint readers, Amazon wants to be sure those features work well. As a result of all this, Amazon has had to re-think its phone program.

That said, the real reason behind the move probably has something to do with the fact that Google is banning apps that put ads on your lock screen from the Play Store. In other words, Prime members can now score affordable phones with no gimmicks. Amazon has confirmed that it's removing the lockscreen ads from Prime Exclusive Phone devices via a software update.

Amazon explains that the ads are being removed in order to "ensure customers can easily use features such as the phone's mobile unlock technologies like facial recognition and fingerprint sensors, as well as be able to personalize device lockscreens with photos or wallpapers".

Amazon has announced it is dumping the lock-screen ads from its Prime Exclusive Phone program.

The online bookseller further says, "Prime Exclusive Phones will continue to be offered exclusively for Prime members with discounted prices and will be available unlocked, giving customers the freedom and flexibility to choose the wireless carrier and service that best fits their need".

Going forward, you'll still own a phone (or buy one) that includes pre-installed Amazon apps, including the Amazon Widget, but the ads and offers won't show up on your lockscreen.

To be clear, just because the company is doing away with lockscreen ads doesn't mean it's shutting down this project.

Amazon confirmed to Business Insider that future models on Amazon's Exclusive Phone program won't come with the Amazon ad lock screens, and they'll still sell at a similar level of discount to the phones now available on the program.
