  • Russia: US Call for UN Meeting on Iran “Destructive”

The U.S. called Friday's meeting after giving moral support to the anti-government protesters in a week of demonstrations and counterdemonstrations.

Every other member of the body, including U.S. allies, voted in favor of a proposal affirming global opposition to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, days after President Donald Trump did so and declared the USA would one day move its embassy from Tel Aviv to the contested holy city. The UN General Assembly on the same issue, passing a non-binding resolution disapproving of the Trump administration's decision.Ahead of the general assembly vote, Haley the United States was "taking names" of those voting against the USA, and afterward, she held a party where the only countries invited were nations that did not support the resolution on Jerusalem.Trump praised Haley's actions before he left the White House for Christmas."Let them vote against us".

Heading into the council chamber, US Ambassador Nikki Haley gave reporters a thumbs-up and answered "yes" when asked if she had the nine votes needed for Friday's meeting to go ahead.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said this week that Washington was seeking emergency sessions on Iran at the United Nations in NY and at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

It also pointed to a U.S. State Department official's Tuesday statement that the United States was communicating with anti-government protesters through its Facebook and Twitter pages in Farsi, and was encouraging them to demonstrate.

"The Iranian regime is now on notice".

Commenting on the possibility of new United States sanctions on Iran, Ryabkov said such methods were "illegitimate".

The statement closed, vowing, "To the regime's victims, we say: You will not be forgotten". Some demonstrators openly chanted anti-government slogans at both the hard line clerics who run the country and at President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate who promised more political freedoms and economic improvements following sanctions relief after the 2015 nuclear deal.

The Iranian government restricted access to social media at the height of the protests over the weekend, but many Iranians also use VPNs so the government can not track their online activity.

Pro-regime rallies were held around Tehran on Friday for the third day running with authorities seeking to put a lid on the violence.

However, minutes later, Nikki Haley US Ambassador praised the protests in Iran as a "powerful exhibition of fearless people".

He criticized European nations and the United Nations for failing to "forcefully speak out" on Iran.

While the U.S. and its European partners - including the United Kingdom, France and Germany - all fundamentally support the right of Iranian demonstrators to peacefully protest, they disagree in their analysis of where the situation on the ground is headed and over the strategic value of ramping up the rhetoric publicly, sources have told CNN. Among them: labeling Iran a "terrorist nation", denying its citizens entry into the United States and Trump saying he respected Iranians while denying them the benefits of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which is aimed at ensuring Iran's nuclear program is pursued for only peaceful ends.

Gholamali Khoshroo said the protests that have roiled Iran over the past week were an internal domestic affair, outside the mandate of the Security Council.

Russian Federation said the United States is exploiting the protests in Iran in order to derail the landmark nuclear deal.

"We see no role for the United Nations Security Council in this issue", he said, according to the agency.
