News of the deal was announced ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's upcoming trip to the country and after New Delhi recently said it was cancelling the missile deal with Israel in favor of a local brand.

PM Netanyahu's visit - he will be accompanied by 130-strong business delegation - is seen to be an effort to build on the July decision taken past year to elevate ties to a "strategic partnership" and deepen trade ties between the two countries.

India, along with more than 120 countries, had voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to drop its recent decesion to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Last April, Israel Aerospace Industries inked agreements amounting to $2 billion with India, including a $1.6 billion contract to deliver a medium-range surface-to-air missile defense system and a $400 million deal for a long-range surface-to-air missile system. The delegation will remain in India for six days as clearly, Mr. Netanyahu has placed building relations with India high on his Foreign Ministry agenda.

India, which has long standing territorial disputes with neighbors China and Pakistan, has signed several big-ticket defense deals since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. The visit is being seen as extremely significant as the two countries, are celebrating 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties. The newspaper noted that India also plans to purchase torpedoes for its submarines as well as assault rifles from Israel.

Officials said they had been asked by Israel to allow some of the offset clauses to be made up by investment in agriculture or environment related businesses, which India is likely to concede.

The visit indicates an upswing in bilateral ties that had received a boost when Ms. Swaraj made an announcement at her first press conference in 2015 about the PM-level visit to Israel from India.

Following the vote, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement saying the budget is "excellent".
