The Panthers are heading to New Orleans to face the Saints in the wild-card round of the National Football League playoffs.

Panthers interim general manager Marty Hurney said the medical staff "did everything the right way" when it came to handling Newton's injury.

The NFL has issued out a few hefty fines to teams for violations of the concussion protocol as the Seattle Seahawks were fined $100,000 for failing to test quarterback Russell Wilson in Week 10.

The 28-year-old was assessed at pitchside - and the Panthers said on their Twitter account he was "evaluated for a concussion and cleared".

According to the revised rule, a player is required to go to the locker room for evaluation if he is found to demonstrate "gross or sustained vertical instability (e.g., stumbling or falling to the ground when trying to stand)".

Newton stayed in for the rest of the game that saw him throw a 56-yard touchdown pass to rookie running back Christian McCaffrey on the third play after he returned.

According to Fox Sports' Chris Myers on the broadcast, Newton's visor poked him in the eye, a odd explanation following a crushing blow.

Newton was slow to get up and collapsed on his way back to the sideline. "We did everything the right way". Newton's hats, from the brimless hat to the "barbershop quartet" look, tend to get fans talking on social media.
