  • Pennsylvania woman receives $284 billion electric bill

Or, if you're Mary Horomanski, you could pay for one month's worth of electricity.

A Pennsylvania woman got the shock of her life when the monthly electric bill arrived and said she owed $284 billion. "I opened it up and there it was", she told the Washington Post.

Horomanski said she is keeping a sense of humor about the situation. "It was like, well, I guess we have a year to come up with this billion-dollar bill". The home's actual bill was recalculated to be $284.46. Naturally, she blamed her Christmas lights.

Penelec, Horomanski's provider, later confirmed that an error had been made after the family contacted the utility company.

Dick Clark Productions Cancels Miss America Contract After Controversial Email
He later added, "I have the utmost respect for the women of this program and contestants at every level". The emails disparaged former Miss Americas' appearance , intellect and sex lives .

The company quickly reassured him it was an error, Horomanski said. But at least not a figure that threatened to send her into cardiac arrest.

Horomanski told the Erie Times-News the $284 billion bill also caused her to ask her son for a different Christmas present this year. The power company acknowledged the mistake and said they really appreciated the customer reaching out.

"We had put up Christmas lights and I wondered if we had put them up wrong", she told the Erie Times-News, which first reported the story.

Turned out, the Horomanski household didn't run up an electric bill greater than the GDP of most states. "I could not stop thinking about this".
